Hajj

Hajj preparation, guidance and support — in collaboration with operators licensed by the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah.

AT A GLANCE

How Hajj works with Rihlah

01

Licensed partners

Hajj is quota-bound and requires a licence to sell. We work alongside operators licensed by the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah rather than claiming a licence we do not hold.

02

Preparation that matters

Knowledge of the rites, realistic physical preparation, and understanding what each day of Hajj demands — the part most pilgrims arrive without.

03

Honest answers

Your nationality decides your route and your wait. We tell you plainly what is possible and when, rather than what sounds encouraging.

Hajj with Rihlah, in collaboration with licensed operators

Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam and the journey of a lifetime for those able to undertake it. Every adult Muslim of sound mind and sufficient means is obliged to perform it once, and for most pilgrims it is the single most significant journey they will ever make. Rihlah supports travellers preparing for Hajj in collaboration with operators licensed by the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, so that the arrangements are correct and your attention can stay on the worship itself.

We want to be plain from the outset about how this works. Hajj is quota-bound and tightly regulated, and a licence is required to sell it. We do not hold that licence and we do not pretend otherwise. What we provide is preparation, guidance and support alongside licensed partners — which, for many pilgrims, is exactly the part that is missing.

What makes Hajj different from Umrah

Umrah can be performed at almost any time of year and takes a few hours to complete. Hajj happens once annually, on fixed days of Dhul Hijjah, and unfolds over several days across Mina, Arafah, Muzdalifah and back to Makkah. The scale is entirely different: millions of pilgrims moving through the same rites at the same time. If you are looking for the year-round option, see our Umrah packages.

The rites, in outline

  • Ihram — entering the sacred state with its intention and conditions.
  • Mina — the day of Tarwiyah, spent in the tent city.
  • Arafah — the standing, and the heart of the entire pilgrimage.
  • Muzdalifah — the night under the open sky, gathering pebbles.
  • Jamarat, sacrifice and tawaf al-ifadah — the days of Tashreeq that complete the rites.

How Hajj places are allocated

Every country receives a quota, and places are distributed through licensed operators or, in some countries, a government ballot or waiting list. This is why the process differs so much depending on your nationality: pilgrims from Malaysia, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, the United States and the Gulf each face a different route and a different wait. The first question we ask is where you hold citizenship or residency, because that determines everything that follows.

Planning years, not months

In several countries the wait for Hajj is measured in years rather than months. Even where places are more readily available, the good operators fill early and prices rise as the season approaches. Beginning two or three years ahead is not excessive; beginning six weeks ahead is rarely realistic. We would rather tell you that honestly than take a deposit for something unlikely to happen.

Preparing physically

Hajj is demanding in a way that surprises many pilgrims. There is a great deal of walking, often in heat and crowds, with limited sleep across several consecutive days. Building fitness in the months beforehand makes a real difference, as does understanding what each day will require of you. Older pilgrims and those with health conditions should plan the journey around their capacity rather than hoping to keep up.

Preparing spiritually and in knowledge

The part most often neglected is knowledge. A pilgrim who arrives understanding the rites, their sequence, their conditions and what to do when something goes wrong has a completely different experience from one following the crowd. We help you prepare properly beforehand, and once you are in Makkah you can sit in the circles of learning in the Haram, where teaching expands considerably during the season.

Visas, Nusuk and the paperwork

Hajj requires its own visa, issued through licensed channels and linked to the official Nusuk system — it cannot be performed on a tourist visa. Vaccination requirements, including meningitis, apply to all pilgrims. Our guide to Umrah visas and Nusuk permits explains how the platform works in general terms, though the Hajj route is separate. Always confirm current requirements through official channels before committing to anything.

What we actually do for you

Our role sits alongside your licensed operator rather than replacing it. We help you understand the routes available for your nationality, prepare in knowledge and in body, arrange the days in Madinah that many pilgrims add before or after, and provide guidance on the ground so that the rites are understood rather than simply followed. Where a licensed partner handles the core Hajj arrangements, we make sure you arrive ready.

Adding Madinah to the journey

Most pilgrims travel to Madinah either side of Hajj, and it is worth doing properly rather than as an afterthought. The Prophet’s ﷺ Mosque, the Rawdah, Uhud and the historic sites deserve unhurried time, and the city offers a calm counterpoint to the intensity of the pilgrimage. See our ziyarah in Madinah for how those days are shaped.

An honest word on cost

Hajj is expensive, and the range is wide depending on proximity to the Haram, tent category in Mina, and the operator. Be cautious of any offer far below the market rate for your country; it usually means a compromise you will feel during the hardest days. We will give you a realistic picture rather than the most attractive one.

Begin the conversation early

If Hajj is on your horizon — this year or in five years — the best thing you can do is start planning now. Tell us your nationality, your rough timeframe and your circumstances, and we will explain honestly what is possible and what it involves. When you are ready, plan your journey and we will take it from there.

Common questions we are asked

Travellers most often ask three things. How far ahead should they begin? In most countries, far earlier than they expect — the wait for a place is measured in years in several nations. What does it cost? A wide range, depending on proximity to the Haram and tent category in Mina. And is it physically manageable? For most people, yes, provided they prepare and choose a package suited to their capacity rather than their ambition.

Whatever your situation, the earlier the conversation begins, the more options remain open to you.
