Your way in

Most travellers heading to Makkah or Madinah arrive through Jeddah, and for centuries it has served exactly this purpose — the sea and now air gateway for pilgrims coming from across the world. We include this page because arrivals matter: the first few hours of a journey set the tone for everything after, and a smooth transfer is worth a great deal after a long flight.

Arriving at King Abdulaziz International

Jeddah’s airport is one of the main entry points to the Kingdom, with a dedicated terminal handling pilgrim traffic. Immigration can be slow at peak seasons, particularly in Ramadan and around Hajj. We arrange meet-and-greet and private transfer so that you are not negotiating taxis and directions while jetlagged.

Onward to Makkah and Madinah

From Jeddah, Makkah is roughly an hour and a half by road, and Madinah is reachable by road or by the high-speed Haramain railway, which is comfortable and fast. We arrange whichever suits your group and your timing, including the sequencing between the two cities if you are visiting both. Note that the road to Makkah passes the boundary of the sacred precinct, which is for Muslims only.

If you have a night here

Sometimes flight timings mean a night in Jeddah before continuing. If so, we arrange accommodation and, if you would like it, a little time by the Red Sea corniche or a meal of Hijazi cooking and fresh seafood. We treat Jeddah as a practical staging point rather than a destination in its own right — our focus is firmly on Madinah and Makkah.

For non-Muslim travellers

Jeddah is open to all travellers, as is Madinah outside the sacred precinct. If you are travelling to Madinah, Jeddah is a straightforward entry point, though flying directly into Madinah is often simpler where routes allow. We will advise on the best option for your nationality, route and dates.

Visas and entry

Entry requirements depend on your nationality and the purpose of your visit. Our guides on the Saudi tourist visa and on Umrah visas and Nusuk permits explain the current position, and you should always confirm the latest requirements through official channels before booking.

We handle the logistics

Transfers, timing, luggage, the railway, the sequencing between cities — these are the parts of a journey that cause the most friction and the least joy. We take them off your hands so that your attention is on the reason you came. When you are ready, plan your journey and we will arrange the way in.

Which airport to fly into

If your journey is centred on Madinah, flying directly into Madinah is usually simpler where routes allow, and saves several hours of ground travel. If you are heading first to Makkah, Jeddah is the natural entry point. Where your itinerary covers both cities, we look at the routing as a whole and suggest whichever arrival makes the sequence work best.

The Haramain high-speed railway

The railway connecting Jeddah, Makkah and Madinah is comfortable, fast and by far the most pleasant way to move between the cities. It removes several hours of road travel and is particularly welcome for families and older travellers. We book seats and arrange transfers at both ends so that the connection is straightforward.

By road

Road transfers remain useful for shorter hops and for flexibility with luggage and timing. We use private vehicles with drivers who know the routes and the checkpoints, so that the journey is calm and predictable. The road towards Makkah passes the boundary of the sacred precinct, which is for Muslims only, and non-Muslim travellers are routed accordingly.

Timing your arrival

Arrival timing matters more here than in most destinations. Landing late at night, at peak season, or immediately before prayer times can turn a simple transfer into a long wait. We plan arrivals with that in mind, and where flight options are poor we will say so and suggest alternatives rather than letting you discover it on the day.

Luggage, Zamzam and departure

Departures have their own practicalities — allowances for Zamzam water, extra luggage from shopping, and airport timings during busy seasons. We advise on all of it before you travel, so that the last day of the journey is as calm as the rest of it.

Where Jeddah fits

We treat Jeddah as the way in rather than a destination we sell. It is a pleasant city with a genuine history as the gateway for pilgrims, and if your schedule leaves you a night here we will make it comfortable and, if you wish, show you something of the seafront and the food. But our attention, and our expertise, is in the two cities you are travelling to.

Meeting you on arrival

Arriving in an unfamiliar country after a long flight is the point at which most journeys go wrong — the queues, the unfamiliar signage, the taxi negotiation, the uncertainty about where you are meant to go. We meet travellers on arrival, handle the transfer, and get you to where you are staying without any of that. It is a small thing that sets the tone for everything after.

Immigration and peak seasons

Processing times vary enormously with the season. In Ramadan and around the Hajj period the terminals are at their busiest and waits can be long; outside those windows arrivals are usually straightforward. We plan the day after your arrival with the season in mind, so that nobody is expected to be anywhere important a few hours after landing.

Health and documentation on entry

Have your visa, vaccination records and accommodation details accessible rather than buried in a bag. Requirements depend on your nationality and the purpose of your visit, and they are periodically updated, so confirm the current position through official channels before you fly. Our guides on the Saudi tourist visa and Umrah visas and Nusuk permits explain the general picture.

Money, connectivity and the small practicalities

A local SIM or eSIM makes everything easier, and card payment is widely accepted in both cities. We advise on what is worth arranging at the airport versus later, and on the handful of practical details — prayer times, transport apps, opening hours — that make the first day feel less foreign.

Beginning the journey properly

Jeddah is where the journey starts rather than where it happens. Our job is to make that beginning effortless so that your attention is already on Madinah or Makkah by the time you arrive. When you are ready, plan your journey and we will arrange the way in.
